Usually we play Tetris vertically and try to get rid of the lines with properly positioned shapes. In Hole, you'll also have forms of Tetris, but they will be used to fill the holes. If you choose the right form, you score points. If it's not good, it will freeze and you have to wait before you can use it again. Use Joker to fill several holes at once.
